Qualitative Evaluation with Family Members

"Somehow, it’s easier when you have a dedicated contact person. You’re more likely to ask questions. She simply gave me the confidence that I could say anything to her. That I could speak freely, without fear of consequences in the ICU."
– Family member on their experience with the FICUS® care model

How families experience the FICUS® family-centered care model

The aim of this study was to explore and understand families’ experiences with the FICUS® care model and the support they received. To this end, 17 family members and 2 patients from 16 families who received FICUS® family-centered care intervention were interviewed.

The results show that families experienced the support they received through the FICUS® care model as helpful in managing and coping with challenging situations. In particular, they emphasized the importance of being guided through the complex situation and receiving support to reduce family burden and distress and to help them cope as a family. Key aspects included clear and continuous communication, emotional support, and having a dedicated point of contact within the treatment team.

Overall, the results highlight the importance of structured, family-focused care that addresses the individual needs of families and continues to support them even after their stay in the intensive care unit.
