FICUS® - Family Support in Intensive Care Units

FICUS

A stay in the intensive care unit is an exceptional situation – not only for patients but also for their family members. The experience is often marked by uncertainty and can be highly stressful. During this time, family members play a central role: they provide support, accompany the patient, and are involved in decision-making – often without receiving any support themselves.

Our research therefore focuses on how families can be specifically supported during this challenging time and how the quality of care for families can be improved. At the center is a new care model, FICUS®, in which specially trained nursing professionals support, inform, and ease the burden on family members.

In four interconnected studies, we are examining how effective and practical this model is, what it costs, how it is experienced by families and professionals – and how it can be implemented sustainably.

FICUS® stands for holistic, family-focused care in intensive care units that puts people at the center – and considers families as an integral part of the whole.
