Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement

Collaboration between patients, their families, the public, and researchers

Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement (PPIE) refers to the active and equal involvement of patients, family members, and public representatives throughout the entire research process. In the FICUS research project, partnership with individuals who have “lived experience” as ICU patients or relatives is central to working with researchers and the study team.

The FICUS Advisory Board of People with Lived Experience (Betroffenenbeirat) works closely with the FICUS research team to ensure that the research involving families of critically ill patients is more relevant, credible, and practice-oriented.

This collaboration aims to improve the quality, acceptance, and impact of the research and to ensure that scientific findings are understandable, accessible, and meaningful for the people they are intended to benefit.
